Russian Military Helmets - SH-68 (Russian: СШ-68 [стальной шлем образца 1968 года/стольной шлим], Greek: steel helmet SH-68 model 1968) - is a steel combat helmet of the Soviet and Russian armed forces. The SSh-68 is a further development of the SSh-60 helmet. It differs primarily in greater strength, greater frontal inclination of the dome and a shorter outer edge.
The helmet weighs 1300 grams (with artificial leather balaclavas - 1500 grams). SSh-68 provides protection against impacts (machetes, etc.) and steel shards (shards) weighing 1.0 grams at speeds up to 250 m/s.

The SS-68 was used by the armed forces of the Soviet Union and its allies in the Warsaw Pact and elsewhere. Today, it continues to serve in most CIS countries, as well as in Vietnam, North Korea and Afghanistan.

Due to the introduction of improved helmets starting with the original 6B7, the SSh-68 was gradually withdrawn from service. In the Russian armed forces, the last examples are gradually replaced by newer 6B7-1M and 6B47 helmets.
SSh-68s are available in three different sizes, P1, P2 and P3. P1 (small) is good up to around 58 head, size 2 (medium) is around 59 to 61 and size 3 (large to extra large) is 61 and above. The SSh-68 helmets are not the same size as NATO helmets, as they are designed to be adapted to be worn by Ushanka soldiers or another heavy hat under it in winter.
In the early 2000s, the Russian military tried to replace the SSh-68 with the new 6B7 helmet, which was never widely used. In 2010, a new model, the 6B27 (see RU: 6Б27) has largely replaced the SSh-68 in Russian service, but the old helmet is still in limited use by the Russian armed forces. In other post-Soviet states (except the Baltic States and Georgia) large stocks of the SSh-68 are still in use, although in Ukraine it has sometimes been replaced by the Kaska-1M (see RU:Kaska-1М).
